Faithful and Clear: A Pastor’s Guide to Church Governance

Faithful and Clear is coming soon.

This book is being written to help pastors, church staff, and lay leaders strengthen the governance documents that guide the life of the local church. It is not written to make churches feel more corporate or to turn pastors into lawyers. The goal is much simpler: to help churches create faithful, clear, and practical structures that support ministry rather than hinder it.

Church governance may not be the reason someone is called into ministry, but it deeply affects how a church makes decisions, handles authority, protects unity, and moves forward in mission. When constitutions, bylaws, policies, and procedures are unclear or outdated, leaders often find themselves managing confusion instead of leading with confidence.

Faithful and Clear is built on the conviction that governance is not merely administrative. It is pastoral. Clear governance can reduce anxiety, build trust, clarify responsibility, and help the church stay focused on the Great Commission.

What the Book Covers

The book walks through the major pieces of church governance and helps leaders understand how each one serves the health and mission of the church.

Part I: Foundations

The opening section explains why governance matters, especially in church revitalization and seasons of change. It also explores the biblical foundation for church governance and introduces the difference between constitutions, bylaws, policies, and procedures.

Part II: Diagnosis and Change

This section helps churches evaluate their current governance documents, plan for needed change, and approach those conversations in ways that avoid unnecessary conflict.

Part III: Sustaining Health

The final section focuses on implementing governance in real church life, stewarding risk, and building systems that can outlast any one leader or season of ministry.

Appendices

The book also includes practical tools, including a church governance assessment, a sample church constitution, a sample bylaws template, and sample policy categories.

It will be especially helpful for churches that are:

Considering updates to their constitution or bylaws
Trying to clarify decision-making authority
Preparing for future growth

Looking for practical tools to strengthen trust and unity

Why It Matters

Healthy governance does not replace prayer, preaching, discipleship, evangelism, or mission. It supports them.

When a church’s governing documents are clear, leaders can lead with confidence, members can trust the process, and the church can give more attention to the work God has called it to do.

That is the heart behind Faithful and Clear: helping churches pursue clarity over complexity, stability over confusion, and faithfulness over fear.
